UFC 230 winners and losers

Michael Lynch

Madison Square Garden was host to UFC 230 this past weekend. It was headlined by the Heavyweight title holder Daniel Cormier and Derrick Lewis. Co-headlined by Long Island’s own Chris Weidman and Jacare Souza. Souza who filled in as a short notice replacement for Luke Rockhold.

Daniel Cormier defeated Derrick Lewis via rear naked choke in the second round. After a round and a half of being wrestled to death, Lewis could no longer fight off the choke. Both fighters took this fight on about a months notice because the UFC needed to have a title fight headline this card. Daniel Cormier has made it clear that he would like to focus only on the Brock Lesnar fight before his retirement. Although Stipe and the Jon Jones super fight seem open to his future, he came out on the Ariel Helwani show and made it clear he is only looking toward the Lesnar fight.

Next match-up: Brock Lesnar

Derrick Lewis fought Alexander Volkov last month in a three rounded war in witch he was losing every round. Magically he landed a knockout late in the last round of that fight. Regardless of his recent loss to Cormier, Lewis is still a legit knockout artist. The rematch with Volkov is a big possibility, or he may fight Stipe if Cormier ends up getting the Brock fight.

Next Match-up: Stipe Miocic

Chris Weidman and Jacare Souza had a three round war in witch two out of three judges had in favor of Weidman. When in the middle of the third round Souza landed a huge right hand that knocked Weidman out cold. Climbing the ladder in the middle weight division, Souza should be first in line to get the title shot after this Whitaker vs Gastelum fight.

Next Match-up: Winner of Whitaker and Gastelum

Weidman on the other hand has been on the wrong side of a handful of key fights. He is 1-4 in his last 5 fights. Having a win over Kevin Gastelum, a win over Souza would have cemented him as the next title challenger. He has options galore, he could get the rematch with Rockhold again, or he could move up to light heavyweight and fight the winner of Jimi Manuwa vs Thiago Santos.

Next match-up: Winner of Manuwa vs Santos

Isreal Adesanya sealed an impressive TKO win over Derek Brunson at UFC 230. It would be a great stylistic match-up for his next fight to be against Luke Rockhold for a number one contender spot. This weekend coming up the UFC makes a trip to Denver, Colorado in the Pepsi Center.
