The MLB is Using E-Sports Perfectly

The MLB is ahead of the game in providing its players a platform to entertain and show off their personalities. Yes, Major League Baseball, you didn't read that wrong. The league that is usually behind the NFL and NBA in all social aspects, is ahead of both during this time of quarantine life.

Baseball is utilizing the e-sports world perfectly, and I can't believe I actually wrote those words down. Its true though, the MLB has grabbed onto the e-sports world and gone for the ride. The NBA and NFL have both done decent, with both creating online tournaments that were streamed on ESPN and will continue to be streamed. Madden even has a celebrity tournament coming up April 19th. The MLB has taken the extra step though to take full advantage of the situation we are in.

The first step they took to differentiate themselves is the fact they are doing a full season with a representative from each MLB team, and as of Saturday (4/18) this was the standings:

Week 1 of the #MLBTheShow Players League has been ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ. Who's your pick to win it all?

Guys like Joey Gallo and Amir Garrett are not only killing it in the league, but also on the mic. Which brings me to the other part of how the MLB is doing this correctly. They are streaming the games on twitch. A platform that doesn't have to worry about following FCC rules aka cursing. While yes, players should be conscious about this aspect when streaming, it does give the fans a true sense of who they are. Watching the NBA and NFL streams was painful at times with guys clearly holding back. It made players feel a bit more robotic than normal.

I'd much rather see stuff like this:

Jared Carrabis on Twitter

Joey Gallo got did dirty by MLB The Show. Clean it up. https://t.co/Bj6u1K54qv

or some of this:

Cรฉspedes Family BBQ on Twitter

Jeff McNeil accidentally throws to 2nd instead of 1st on a dropped 3rd strike with 2 outs Amir Garrett: "JEFFREY WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" next pitch: Garrett hits an RBI 2B to LF, "that's why you don't make dumb mistakes! don't do dumb stuff!" THEN WATCH WHAT HAPPENS ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ https://t.co/srmD06OQiR

That's what I want to see. Pure unfiltered reactions and thoughts on a game we all can play from the guys who play the real thing at an elite level. It makes it entertaining, it makes a fan from every team interested, it makes this quarantine life just a bit easier. Keep it up MLB, you're doing something right.

Don't ruin it.
