The Tennessee Titans have already played two preseason games. They are 1-1 in those games. Tennessee recently lost to the New England Patriots at home 22-17.
With just two preseason games left before the Titans go on the road for Week 1 on Sunday September 8 against the Cleveland Browns, does Tennessee have a quarterback controversy on their hands?
Well, a lot of people think they do. When training camp opened, I did not think that would be case.
I thought Marcus Mariota was for sure going to be the Week 1 starter. He is in the final year of his contract and has a lot to prove as a 25-year-old. Mariota was the second overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.
However, the Titans decided to acquire quarterback Ryan Tannehill from the Miami Dolphins during the offseason. This trade was made in order to have insurance for Marcus Mariota because he is often injured.
This insurance trade could turn into a quality trade especially if Tannehill wins the starting quarterback job. He is 31 years old and Ryan Tannehill needed to get out of Miami. He was not in a good situation there and Tannehill is in a much better situation with Tennessee.
He has a top running back in Derrick Henry, he has a solid receiving core, and a solid offensive line. Tannehill would also have one of the best defenses to work with as well.
So far this preseason, he has completed 19-of-27 passes for 214 yards and three touchdowns. Tannehill has also rushed for eight yards on one carry.
Marcus Mariota has completed 10-of-17 passes for 87 yards and one touchdown. He has not even attempted to run the football. The Titans are trying to make him into a pocket passer and it is clear that Mariota is not a pocket passer. His strength is throwing on the run.
Marcus Mariota has played a lot with the first team.
It is going to be interesting to see how Head Coach Mike Vrabel takes this approach heading into the third preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which is scheduled for next Sunday night at home.
This game is known as the "dress rehearsal" for the regular season. If Marcus Mariota were to struggle next weekend, then Mike Vrabel has a big decision on his hands.
As of right now, Mariota will most likely be the Week 1 starter unless Ryan Tannehill completely outplays him the next two weeks.
