Pro Futsal is off and running in the states, where it's fairly new to the average sports fan. For some of us, like myself, I've been watching futsal for a few years now but it's been overseas on obscure TV channels. Thanks to the NFPL (National Futsal Premiere League) fans in mid-market cities like Ann Arbor, Lansing and of course the "home team" to 12oz Sports, the Akron Vulcans can now watch first hand this heart pumping sport. Sure, a few larger cities have teams like Chicago and Indianapolis, but for the most part the league has strategically placed teams in markets small enough to find sports fans starving for a pro team but large enough to garner decent sized crowds.
We may be prejudice here at 12oz Sports but it sure seems like Akron has become the benchmark. They're a first year expansion team who's tied with Grand Rapids for the best record and judging by some photos from other teams it seems Akron is leading in attendance as well!
This sport literally combines basketball (similar court and markings), soccer (firmly rooted in soccer, also known to some as indoor soccer although not the traditional form) and hockey (substitute on the fly, power plays although rare) and is highly fast paced. These men can move up and down the court in a blink of an eye, with quick shots, amazing foot skills and occasionally the hard foul. What makes Akron's last game against M.W.F.C. so impressive is that they scored 10 goals in a sport where the players and court are compact and the goals are not that big.
Akron has an unfair advantage though, they have Otto Orf! Otto is the jack of all trades for Akron, part owner, coach, mentor, marketer and more! If you don't know Otto well, check part of his bio out HERE. When I was in high school I'd watch him play in Cleveland and he was always distinguishable by his long hair.
Here's where 12oz Sports fits in. Currently we're the only broadcaster of the league and based on numbers there's a demand! Futsal in America is pretty new, in its infancy but is pure...zero drama and all about the fans and the action on the court. That's what we're all about here at 12oz Sports, we're a grassroots sports broadcasting company, relying on the hard work of individuals honing their skills in hopes they personally will make it big or the network as a whole makes it big. If 12oz Sports succeeds, so does all our contributors. Same with Futsal and the NFPL, if Akron succeeds both financially and through fan excitement the entire league shall benefit.
Make sure to catch our live broadcasts each Akron home game and hopefully someday 12oz Sports will be in every NFPL arena!
