I am not going to lie, this idea popped in my head recently but is probably being deployed by many skilled gamblers on a regular basis. I am also not the greatest gambler because I hate betting on teams I like and usually just look for crazy upsets. After scoring nice payouts on the Buckeyes over Clemson and the Browns over the Steelers, I took some time off making bets. Then this past weekend I thought to myself, "Wonder what the odds become if I parlay heavy favorites in something like a 4-teamer?" So I adopted this strategy starting Monday night.
So day one looked like this:
Murray State -750 v SIU Edwardsville - the two previous attempts to battle for these two teams both got canceled. However, Murray State looks a lot better on paper than their opponent, despite the similar records. Final, Murray State 86 SIU 57
Eastern Kentucky -340 v Tennessee Tech - c'mon, 16-5 versus 3-19....no brainer. Final, Eastern 83 Tech 72...a little closer than I would have liked.
Bet and Return: Bet $200, returned $293.33 for a healthy $93.33 profit.
Day Two:
Akron -1500 v Northern Illinois - this was supposed to be a blowout. Instead, Akron needed a 40-31 second half to escape a close one 81-76, despite their 12-4 record over the 2-11 NIU squad...whew!
Oklahoma State -800 v Iowa State - not even close, OK St 76-58
Kent State -510 v Western Michigan - what is it about the MAC? Another expected blowout (12-5 versus 4-12) ended up being a nailbiter. Kent wins the second half 40-29 and the game 76-69....damn MACtion.
Toledo -800 v Miami (OH) - finally a MAC game that didn't give me an ulcer. Toldeo wins going away 87-75
Bet and Return: Bet $100, returned $161.47 for a healthy $61.47 profit.
Day 3 - time to get aggressive:
Furman -1600 v Samford
Chattanooga -315 v Western Carolina
Maryland -590 v Nebraska
North Carolina -1800 v Northeastern
USC -555 v Arizona St
Kansas -1100 v Kansas St
Seton Hall -1200 v DePaul
Summary: most of these were easy wins. However, Chattanooga was down 12 with three and a half minutes to go!! I had already separated myself from the money and poured a stiff tequila. Then I peeked at the screen, down to 5 with 1:45 left...could they really? Down to 2 with 33 seconds left, holy cow this could happen!! The game would go to overtime where Chatt wins 89-81!! That is right, this is where I normally lose, but I normally take the underdog!! Maybe I am on to something! Seton Hall did give me a little bit of a scare but won by 8 after outscoring DePaul by 12 in the second half.
Bet and Return: Bet $200, returned $482 for a healthy $282 profit.
Total Week's Profit: $436.80
I may have found a good strategy because while anything can happen, many of these teams are heavy favorites for a reason. Even if down, and even by double digits, these teams have something that their opponent does not, the ability to crank it up. I will continue this strategy and hopefully, report back even better results soon!
